Ruben J Dailey, 70, of Asheville died Thursday. He was Asheville’s first black city councilman and was a leader in the civil rights movement for many years. President-elect Ronald Reagan has picked Bill Brock. Republican National Committee chairman to be special trade representative filling the final cabinet level slot in the new administration, sources said Thursday. A car apparently went out of control Thursday night and hit the railing at the Trade Street Gallery on Trade Street. The railing and a big chunk of concrete were pulled away from the building and pieces of rock were scattered along Trade Street. The car didn't stop, but the police say its a dark blue car that must have some big dents in it. C. 28782 MONDAY, JAN. 12,1981 Bob Millikins Return Home Mr and Mrs. Robert H. Millikin, Jr. have bought the Helen Gage home at 319 Melrose Lane, Tryon and have retired here. Mr. and Mrs. Millikin moved from Tryon in 1956 to Catawba County near Newton where Mr. Millikin served 23 years as Industrial Engineer with the GE plant there. He retired in December of 1978. Mrs. Millikin is the former Molly Bryan of Mullins, S. C. She came to Tryon as a registered nurse in the old St. Luke's Hospital and was later in Dr. John Z. Preston’s office. In Catawba County she served as Women’s Editor of the Newton Observer-News-Enterprise for 12 years. She was active in the Catawba Extension Service and in 1978 when she was president of the Catawba County Extension Homemakers Club Council she was a state winner of the A&P Leadership Award and was presented a silver tray at the State Council meeting in Raleigh She worked on the Governor’s Anti-Litter Campaign and in promoting the Community Watch Program in Catawba County She located and catelogued old forgotten cemeteries and was active in the Episcopal Church of the Epithany in Newton Mr. Millikin is a former member of the Tryon Kiwanis Club, owned Millikin Electrical Service in Tryon, was the first Continued On Back Page Jim Rutledge Is Kiwanis Speaker The Tryon Kiwanis Club will meet Tuesday at 12:45 p.m. at the Pacolet River Plantation. Jim Rutledge of Milliken, Inc. will talk on "Be Happy." Mr. Rutledge recently conducted a seminar on effective communications for the Tryon Methodist Men. He has a vast background and many years of experience in industry, academic and church related communication programs He is knowledgeable of communication techniques and skills that apply to business and personal development. A native of Johnstown, Pa., he is a graduate of Juniata College, Huntington. Pa., with a B. S. in Business Administration with Accounting as a major. A veteran of World War II, he retired as Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserves in 1970 He was with a Public Accounting firm as an accountant for three years before joining Milliken in 1956. He has developed and conducted in-company training programs for all levels of management and has served as a Dale Carneige Instructor He has written a book entitled. "Effective Communication One to One — One to a Bunch ” He has taught at Spartanburg Tech and Spartanburg Methodist.
